PNEUMABORT-K+1b

Equine Rhinopneumonitis Vaccine - Killed Virus

Indications   For vaccination of healthy horses as an aid in the prevention of respiratory disease caused by EHV 1p and EHV 1b viruses as well as for use in pregnant mares as an aid in the prevention of abortion due to EHV1 infections. Horses incubating other infections or suffering from malnutrition, parasitism or other diseases and conditions subjecting them to stress are poor subjects for immunization and may not develop or maintain a serviceable immune response.

Compositions   Pneumabort-K+1b is a killed virus vaccine of EHV 1p and 1b (equine rhinopneumonitis virus) which has been chemically inactivated with formalin, and combine with a specially prepared oil adjuvant. Pneumabort-K+1b is grown and prepared on an equine cell line substrate.

General Information

A short duration of serviceable immunity occurs after herpesvirus 1 infection or vaccination. It is necessary to maintain as high a level of immunity as possible to aid in protection against upper respiratory tract infection, and spread of field strains of virus to pregnant mares. Pregnant mares require the highest possible level of protection against infection after the fifth month of pregnancy; this should be maintained throughout pregnancy.

The vaccine is a killed virus preparation, and may be administered at any time to horses or mares that may be moved from the premises, or that may be exposed to infection.

Administration & dosage

For Pregnant Mares: Aseptically administer one 2mL dose intramuscularly during 5th, 7th and 9th month of pregnancy. Revaccinate at 5th, 7th and 9th month of pregnancy.

For young Horses: Aseptically administer one 2mL dose intramuscularly followed by a second 2mL dose 3 to 4 weeks later. Revaccinate with a single 2mL dose 6 month after the second primary dose and annually thereafter. To insure proper placement and retention of the vaccine, inject deep into the heavy muscles of the hindquarter. Mild exercise to promote absorption is recommended for one week after injection.

Maiden and barren mares kept in barn-or pasture-contact with vaccinated mares should be vaccinated on the same schedule as the pregnant mares with which they are in contact. Mares more than five months pregnant at the time of arrival on a farm should be vaccinated upon arrival and at two-month intervals until foaling.

Pregnant mares that are in contact with mares that have aborted equine herpesvirus 1 infected fetuses should be vaccinated. Such vaccination may provide immunity for those mares in the group, which are not incubating an abortigenic infection at the time of vaccination.
