Fel-o-Vax PCT is prepared from feline rhinotracheitis, calici, and panleukopenia
which have been grown on feline kidney tissue cell line and inactivated with
formaldehyde. The antigens have been combined and an adjuvant added for
convenient administration to cats of all ages. Prior to inactivation of the
viruses, the tissue culture fluids are filtered to remore cellular debris, often
responsible for tissue reactions, and to assist in complete inactivation of the
viruses.

Discussion |
|
Feline rhinotracheitis and calici viruses both cause an upper respiratory tract
infection in susceptible cats of all ages. The rhinotracheitis virus affects the
epithelial surface of the upper respiratory passages and conjunctiva, which
frequently causes hypersalivation, coughing and sneezing. Ocular discharge is a
common symptom associated with the infection.
Calici virus
infections are recognized by ulcerative lesions in the oral cavity, tongue
epithelium and the nose. Both rhinotracheitis and calici viruses cause serious,
and occasionally fatal, disease in susceptible cats, but are most pronounced in
young kittens.
Feline panleukopenia infection
usually results in an acute fulminating disease with high mortality, especially
in kittens; however, subclinical or mild cases can be common under certain
conditions. Symptoms include depression, anorexia, vomiting, weight loss and
diarrhea, which is frequently accompanied by blood-tinged feces. In young
kittens the virus causes cerebellar hypoplasia characterized by incoordination,
staggering, and rolling. Such kittens have been exposed in utero or shortly
after birth.
